Willie Stewart takes Drumming to Florida Schools

Willie Stewart

Drummer Willie Stewart

Jamaican drummer, William 'Willie' Stewart has now taken his distinct style of drumming into schools in South Florida.

For the last eight years he has been teaching the art of drumming in Broward County  This commitment working with young persons, motivating, uplifting and empowering them lead to the creation of his company - Solutions in Music.

After 23 years with the international reggae band - Third World - Willie Stewart went on to hone his drumming skills later becoming a drum instructor and drum therapist, while pursuing his passion of teaching.  Today, he continues to work with youth, teaching them the history and art of drumming, as well as the ability to focus and communicate using their creative talents.

Recently, Willie Stewart took his technique center stage and worked with 60 students from two South Florida schools at a drumming workshop at the Broward Center Performing Arts (BCPA) in downtown Fort Lauderdale.  The students were from Parkway Middle School and Winston Park Elementary.

"We are excited about this session. This program will further enhance and continue to nurture our cultural relationship with Jamaica," according to Mrs. Jan Goodheart, public affairs director at the Broward Center.

In 2006, the Broward Center for the performing Arts had forged an alliance with the Consulate General of Jamaica resulting in a range of successful performances including the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica (NDTC); Dem Three Jamaican Tenors; Jamaica Farewell, and Reggae Symphony.

Through his Solutions in Music teaching company, he has also done workshops with small groups, corporations, universities and community groups around the globe. Aside from the creative art of drumming, through this phenomenal experience one can also learn team building and uniquely, a form of stress relief.

Stewart expresses contentment and a deep sense of spirit as he has now blended his passion of teaching, service to the community and his talent of communicating through music, specifically drumming.

SIGN OF THE TIMES
TRUCK STOP - JAMAICA

De Riddim Box might be on to an early trend here.  Jamaican  establishments originating in the United States are now taking their operation to  Jamaica.

Patrons of South Florida's popular outdoor dining and hang-out spot, Truck Stop, located at Griffin Road and US 27 on the outskirts of Weston,  will be happy to know that they can now "fill-up" at Truck Stop, Jamaica.

Located on East King's House Road, the newly opened Truck Stop Bar & Grill is designed to emit a calm, outdoor vibe. The grill and bar are decorated with elements of nature. Wooden barrels converted to serve as the bases for tables and some chairs, and bamboo and wood are used for fencing, placed at strategic points around the venue and complemented by plants. ,

Omar Shoucair, who is one of the managers, explains that the ambience is one of the characteristics of Truck Stop and makes patrons feel at ease. "It is different when compared to most restaurants here and it is an alternative to going to a club. It is a cool, relaxed vibe here, very simple and natural. We play music but not to disturb conversation. The fact that it is outdoors too appeals to the smokers and non-smokers."

With its simple concept, Truck Stop appeals to anyone who simply wants to have a good time over food and drink. "Persons of different ages come out."

Next time you are in Kingston, drop by the Truck Stop Bar & Grill for a feel of the Florida vibe.

Many will travel home to the Caribbean to celebrate the Holidays in the traditional Island style.  Some will venture up North in the cold to spend time with family and friends, taking the South Florida heat as a special gift.

Christmas HamWherever you choose to celebrate, there will definitely be the traditional Christmas Tree, Christmas Carols, Parang, Cake, Sorrell, Ham, Jug Jug, Rum Popo, Pastelles, Ponce de crema, John Canoe, Junkanoo, Fire Crackers, Starlights, Christmas Morning Church Service, all part of the traditional Caribbean Christmas throughout the islands.

BOLT, RICHARDS NAMED
ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Bolt&Sanya Richards

On Sunday 22 November, 23-year-old Jamaican Usain Bolt and USA's (Jamaican Born) 24-year-old Sanya Richards were crowned as the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year 2009, at the World Athletics Gala hosted by International Athletic Foundation (IAF) Honorary President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and IAF & IAAF President Lamine Diack in the Salle des Etoiles of the Sporting Club d'Eté, Monte Carlo.

Bolt, who again captivated the attention of the sporting world with his World 100m and 200m gold medals, earned the honour for the second consecutive year.

"It's been an amazing season, but also a trying season," said Bolt, who broke his own World records with stunning 9.58 and 19.19 performances at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. "To be named athlete of the year is such a great honour, it shows that all the work we put in pays off."

Like Bolt in the shorter sprints, Richards dominated the women's 400m, producing seven of the year's 10 fastest performances and finally won her first World title.

"I was asked if this feeling would be the same as being World champion and it really is," said Richards, who had previously been named World Athlete of the Year in 2006. "Considering the other athletes I was up against this year, I know this must have been a really tough decision."

Eric Williams Lecture Touts A New Vision For The Caribbean

Former Prime Minister of Jamaica Portia Simpson Miller, Sister 'P' as they call her, delivered a rousing and timely address at the 11th Annual Florida International University (FIU) Eric E. Williams Memorial Lecture on Friday, November 6, 2009.  Her lecture, "A New Vision for a New World Reality: Prospects for the Anglophone Caribbean," was the feature of this year's Distinguished Africana Scholars Lecture Series, and an integral part of FIU's African & African Diaspora Studies Program in the University's new School of International and Public Affairs.  For the first time, the Lecture was webstreamed live to the Trinidad and Tobago University of the West Indies (UWI) community.

Simpson Miller, an engagingly warm and self-effacing personality, is Jamaica's current Leader of the Opposition and the first woman to become Prime Minister.  She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in public administration, an Honorary Doctorate from the Union Institute and University inCincinnati, Ohio, and has participated in the Leaders in Development Executive Program at the JFK School of Government, Harvard University.

Portia Simpson Miller

But it was Simpson Miller's sound historical knowledge of the genesis of Caribbean unity that was most notable, several times causing the 300-plus audience to erupt in both applause and approbation. She effectively reviewed the Caribbean's long history of fragmentation and opposition to meaningful unification. She bemoaned the lost years during which its people might have been a collective leader on the world stage and offered several distinct remedies for this time-worn proposition that if enacted, along with measures that are currently being proposed by the region's players, might well jumpstart this seemingly elusive vision.

The Lecture, which seeks to provide an intellectual forum for the examination of pertinent issues in Caribbean and African Diaspora history and politics, is co-sponsored by:  the Caribbean Consular Corps (Miami); Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs; Delancyhill, P.A.; Diane Galloway's Herbal Gardens, Inc.; FIU: College of Arts and Sciences, School of International and Public Affairs, AADS Graduate Students' Association, Caribbean Students' Association, Council of Student Organizations, Latin American and Caribbean Center, National Society of Black Engineers, Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series, Student Government Association, Women's Studies, Women's Studies Graduate Students' Association; Dipcon Construction; Jaskq Creations; Joy's Roti Delight; Prof. Leroy Lashley; Miami-Dade College;  and the Trinidad & Tobago Diaspora, Inc.

The Lecture is also supported by The Eric Williams Memorial Collection at The University of the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago campus), which was inaugurated by former U.S. Secretary of State, Colin L. Powell in 1998.  It was named to UNESCO's prestigious Memory of the World Register in 1999.

Needy Kids Christmas Treat - Jamaica

On Saturday, December, 5, Elgeta Thompson-Martin and the Needy Kids Organization of Florida brought smiles and good cheer to over 600 disadvantaged boys and girls in Jamaica.  From as early as 10:00 am, buses began to roll into the St. Andrews Parish Church Hall in Kingston and as the morning progressed the excitement in the air increased.

Needy Kids

By noon, the hall was filled with children from several homes including the Maxfield Park Children's Home, Glenhope, Best Care Lodge, My Father's Place, Mustard Seed, Alpha Boys Home, RJR Basic School, Born Again Basic School and Sunshine Boys Home.

Ryan Berry

Glenhope Girls Dance

Girls from Glenhope would not be outdone by the boys, they ignited the audience with displays of the latest popular dance moves.

The big moment for all was the arrival of Santa and the distribution of gifts.

Santa & the Kids

The Needy Kids Christmas Treat is usually funded from proceeds of the annual Independence Ball in Florida.  As a result of the   current economic recession, a decision was made to  postpone the Ball for 2009.  Thanks to the support of companies such as Royal Funeral Home, Attorney Sharon Brown, Dr. Olive Chung-James, Jones Dental Service, Robinson & Company, American Airlines, Air Jamaica Cargo, Valmor International Shipping, Brown & Brown Electric, Dr. Goldson Rehab Center and a number of volunteers and donors enough funds were collected to treat the kids this year.

Elgeta & Pat Williams

Elgeta Thompson-Martin and Pat Campbell, Marketing Officer of VMBS. Campbell acted as  MC for the event.

Support in Jamaica was received from VMBS, Bare Essentials Band providing the Sound, Pegasus Hotel and Kiwanis Downtown Kingston.  Several other companies donated goods and services to make the event a tremendous success.
