CONSUL GENERAL EXPRESS GRIEF AS TRIBUTES POUR IN AFTER DEATH OF PROF. REX NETTLEFORD
The Consulate General of Jamaica is saddened by the news of the passing of a brilliant Jamaican cultural lion and iconic Caribbean cultural resource the Most Honourable Prof. Rex Nettleford, OM. We share in the grief and shock experienced by the entire Jamaican family and particularly those community members here in Florida and the Southern United States who were directly touched by the contribution and reach of Professor Nettleford, in as many fields as he cared to touch.
Whether in the creative and literary arts vanguard, the Diasporic movement , the shaping of socio-political policy, or the enlightenment he delivered in philosophical and academic spheres, his erudition shone. Professor Nettleford easily defied confinement in any typical mould and indeed can truly be said in his own time to "bestride" life and the world stage "like a Colossus". Excellence was his hallmark, and underscoring his multiple achievements in historic and contemporary leadership was his capacity to inspire and promote a renaissance of spirit, and by his own example demonstrate the prospect of just reward for exemplary work. We all mourn his loss, and condole with his family, the University of the West Indies community and the members of his beloved National Dance Theatre Company which he led for half a century. He will be deeply missed.
The Consulate General will in collaboration with the Community announce in short order the arrangements being made for a fitting recognition here in South Florida of his departure from our society and his contribution to the identity of a nation. In the meantime we will keep the community informed of the significant tributes and plans for honouring his memory as they emanate from Kingston.
We also take this opportunity to thank those community members and friends who have thoughtfully called to remark on our collective loss and express their sympathies.
Sincerely,
Sandra Grant Griffiths

LAS' LAP FOR NETTLEFORD AT T&T CARNIVAL
T&T musicologist Dr Pat Bishop wants Carnival Tuesday to be made a 'las lap' for the late scholar Prof Rex Nettleford.
Musicologist Pat Bishop
The

Carnival
Tuesday
-
February

and
it
will
be a
fitting
tribute
to
him.
Speaking
recently
at a
Media

luncheon
at
the
Hilton
Trinidad,
Bishop
said
she
received
a
call
from
former
secretary

of
the
Commonwealth,
Sir
Sridath
Ramphal,
asking
her
to
highlight
Nettleford's
connection
with
Trinidad
culture.
'What
Rex
was
about
is
precisely
what
Carnival
is
about.
He
was
about
spanning
millennium,
spanning
culture,
making
relationships
and
most
crucially,
acknowledging
them.
If
therefore
this
is
Carnival
and
his
funeral
was
to
take
place
on
Carnival
Tuesday,
then
I
feel
that
Carnival
will
not
have
been
badly
spent,'
she
said.
The
former
Carnival
Institute
director
said
Nettleford
always
lamented
the
fact
that
Trinidad
had
more
'dollars
than
cents
(sense)'.
'He
used
to
say
to
me
with
a
great
deal
of
sorrow
'what
a
shame
it
is
that
Trinidad
has
more
dollars
than
cents
(sense)'.
And
there
was
never
anything
that
I
could
say
to
argue
with
that,
because
it
was
so
plainly
clear
-
more
dollars
than
cents.
And
that
is
what
has
happened
to
Carnival.
It
has
become
part
of
the
consumer
world.
It
has
become
I
want,
you
must
have
and
you
must
have
to
gimme.'
Bishop
also
called
on
members
of

JOAN ANDREA'S NEW BOOK ON SALE
Joan Andrea Hutchinson's newest offering "Kin Teet Kibba Heart Bun" records how Jamaicans from humble circumstances used their ingenuity to overcome the obstacle of a shallow pocket to live, love and raise children in dignity. Practices that have become the unseen foundation of what is making the country great today. In her words it is "Celebrating the creativity of jamaican 'poor' people.
Using the humour in the Jamaican language, Hutchinson authentically retells the pieces of the recent and not too recent past that, she says we are too busy now to hear from our grandmothers. I would add, the grandmothers are probably themselves out in the workplace and are too busy to tell.

JAMAICAN SKIER QUALIFIES FOR WINTER OLYMPICS

Skier Errol Kerr, who hopes to represent Jamaica in the Vancouver Olympics, starts on a practice run after his mother Catherine Kerr, right, released the starting gate he built at his home in Truckee, Calif. Most Jamaicans have never seen snow, but a young skier will be hoping to wear the tropical island's colors to Vancouver 's slopes in 2010, and bring home the Caribbean 's first winter Olympic medal. Kerr, born to an American mother and a Jamaican father, grew up a dual citizen between the Lake Tahoe region of the Sierra Nevada, where he moved with his mother as a child from Westmoreland, Jamaica's westernmost parish.
Kerr is taking nothing for granted. He spends his days training at Alpine Meadows, a resort at Lake Tahoe that has sponsored him, and in his mother's front yard, where he built a starting gate with the same specifications as the one in Vancouver and rigged up his own snowmaking machine.

His mother, Catherine Kerr, once a ski racer herself, stands behind the practice gate, counting down: "Racers ready ... Attention ... " She lets the gate fly. Errol Kerr springs out, strides. He plants his poles once, and crouches for the first tabletop jump, staying tight and close to the ground. Another stride, another jump. Then he circles back, and goes through it all again ... and again .... and again, shaving off the precious fractions of a second that could land him ahead of the pack in Vancouver .
Errol Kerr's late father never strapped on a pair of skis, Errol's mother said. It would have moved him to see how far his son has come, and to know that he is competing for the island, she said. Kerr said part of his dream was always to race for his father's country - under the black, green and yellow flag of Jamaica .
"To be able to see Errol grab a hold of that and say let's take it a step further, put Jamaica on the map of skiing, it's beautiful," she said. "He would just be so proud."
