Jamaican Diaspora United States

Joint Statement - Haiti Earthquake Relief and Recovery

On behalf of the many Jamaicans  and persons of Jamaican descent residing throughout the United States, we would like to express our profound sorrow and hope for recovery to the people of Haiti and their Diaspora. Our community is are gathering official information from federal, state, local, and international sources and government officials on the assessment of the tragic aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.  Given our experience with dealing with disaster rescue and recovery in the Caribbean, it is incumbent upon us to be part of the coordinated and efficient international relief effort.

Most importantly, we would like to encourage all community leaders and citizens in our respective regions to organize their own database of contacts for mobilization and to catalog all offers of donations offered, whether human or in-kind.   All organizations are encouraged to restrain from uncoordinated collection of items without the direction of a logistics and transportation plan for these items. At the present time, we have been advised that financial funds are the most important need in support of all relief efforts, for example:

BAJAN TENNIS PRO IN CANADA PROMOTES CARIBBEAN GETAWAYS

Lionel Eli

Lionel Eli, a former Barbadian Davis Cup player now based in Toronto, said that in this year's challenging global economic environment he is prepared to offer his treasured database of sporting clients to the region for the design and promotion of fitness getaways.

The president of the Lionel Eli Tennis Academy, who also is a respected personal trainer and injury therapist, commented, "we believe the Caribbean is the perfect location for North Americans to escape from both the stresses of life and the cold wintry conditions we experience each year ... so I look forward to offering tennis and health and wellness packages to our existing database of sporting enthusiasts here in North America."

This month Eli travels to his native Barbados with an entourage of Canadian tennis players who will participate in a week-long tennis camp, including playing friendly matches with Paragon Tennis Club.

Eli believes that the Caribbean continues to give lip service to the concept of sports tourism and believes the region is still "missing the ball" by not attracting the thousands of potential visitors who are interested in training in ideal climatic conditions.

Lionel Eli with Student

"We plan to extend our program beyond Barbados this year and approach destinations like St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Jamaica and the Bahamas, provided there is interest in developing what we think is a very lucrative market," said Eli, who added that he also hoped to share some of his team's coaching skills with locals in the Caribbean.

Eli, who has helped prepare numerous top-ranked Canadian players secure full tennis scholarships to colleges in the United States, said health and fitness "must become a priority if we are to enjoy quality of life here on earth," as he encouraged both the public and private sector to participate in the getaway program.

JOAN ANDREA'S NEW BOOK ON SALE

Joan Andrea Hutchinson's newest offering "Kin Teet Kibba Heart Bun" records how Jamaicans from humble circumstances used their ingenuity to overcome the obstacle of a shallow pocket to live, love and raise children in dignity. Practices that have become the unseen foundation of what is making the country great today. In her words it is "Celebrating the creativity of jamaican 'poor' people.

Using the humour in the Jamaican language, Hutchinson authentically retells the pieces of the recent and not too recent past that, she says we are too busy now to hear from our grandmothers. I would add, the grandmothers are probably themselves out in the workplace and are too busy to tell.

January 2010 greeted us with some real cold temperatures, especially here in South Florida where temperatures fell as low as 32 degrees, Fahrenheit.  This was one of those times when we could not call our friends up North and brag how we were running around in shorts and tees as they freeze their derrieres off.

While the cold may have had some of us hibernating for a few days, it was business as usual for us at De Riddim Box, as we were busy gathering timely information for our first issue of the new year. This month is off to a very rapid start with the Martin Luther King Holiday on January  18, we take time to remember and honor the civil rights leader.

January also brings the week-long Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival in Jamaica, January 24 to 30, wrapping up  with three nights at a new venue, Greenfield Stadium, Trelawny, just 10 minutes from Montego Bay. Air Jamaica is offering bargain rates  from many U.S. cities so it is not too late to Get Up and Go.

We are very excited about a number of new projects we will be launching this year, along with some of our annual events which will be improved and more exciting.  We will also partner with other companies to offer discounts and savings on a number of products and events.

Speaking of discounts, we are offering a five dollar discount to  subscribers who purchase tickets to our Valentine's Variety show, Love is a Funny Little Thing, scheduled for Sunday, February 14 at the Miramar Cultural Center.  See details below on how to  access the discount offer online at www.miramarculturalcenter.org using the code LOVE.
