National Honors for
Norma Darby Norma Darby

Mrs. Norma E. Darby, Director of the Jamaica Folk Revue, a Miami-based cultural group has been awarded the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service (BHM) by the Government of Jamaica.

Mrs. Darby is among the many recipients to receive the National Honour to be presented by the Governor General, His Excellency, the Most. Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, at the National Awards Ceremony at Kings House, on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 16th.She has been honored for loyal and meritorious service to Jamaica and its Diaspora in the field of cultural arts as a folklorist.

Mrs. Darby is a co-Founder of the Florida-based, cultural group, the Jamaica Folk Revue, which started 30 years ago with an aim to preserve the Jamaican culture abroad, through education and entertainment.

Folk Revue

Under her leadership, the Jamaica Folk Revue through its group of dedicated artists have been committed to providing an environment for cultural growth in the Diaspora through presentations of oral history, music, dance, mime and song.  Over the years, the group has been a staple at every event bearing Jamaica's culture and heritage, performing extensively throughout Florida at all kinds of festivals educating through entertainment.

Mrs. Darby is also the founder of the annual cultural tributes to Jamaica's former cultural icon, the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley (Miss Lou) who died in July 2006 in Toronto, Canada.

Her tenacity and drive, comes from her dedication to, and love of country, according to Colin Smith, leader of the Tallawah Mento Band who has worked extensively with Mrs. Darby in various productions for the band and during his time as a tenor with the Jamaica Folk Revue.  Additionally, a significant part of her work is educating children of Jamaican descent of their rich history and culture.  This is also done primarily through drama, song and dance, he continued.

Mrs. Darby took an interest in creative arts at an early age while attending high school at Wolmer's Girls.  She migrated to the United States where she immediately became involved in the social scene directing her talent towards folk culture.

Already, she has been the recipient of several awards and accolades, including that of the Jamaica Consulate Community Service, Broward and Dade counties, and local organizations, for the promotion of Jamaican culture, especially folkloric.

Caribbean-American Journalist & Media Association Launched.

Peter Webley of Caribbean Today and Kerven Clenance of The Sales Department at the recent launch of the Caribbean-American Journalist & Media Association.

The Caribbean-American Journalists and Media Association (CAJMA) was launched recently in South Florida.  CAJMA is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Caribbean-Americans in the news industry.

CAJMA was created to be a national voice and unified vision for all Caribbean-American journalists.

Felicia Persaud, CEO of Hard Beat Communications and founder of Carib-ID, the movement to get Caribbean nationals accurately counted, urged those gathered at the launch to get involved in ensuring to spread the 2010 Census message to all Caribbean migrants and Caribbean Americans, to write in their nationality or ancestry under the Some Other Race category of the 2010 form.

 Felicia

Persaud said it is imperative that Caribbean media become ambassadors in the process since without proper demographic numbers from the U.S. Census, the Caribbean American bloc will remain not even a blip on the radar.

She urged that Caribbean nationals take a page from the books of Hispanics, who fought for an origins category on the Census and now are the most sought after market.

Until we can tell our stories in numbers, we will continue to be ignored and not at the table, added Persaud.

Saint Lucia kicked off its Road Shows for travel partners with a lively première in New York City last month, sparing no effort to promote the island's renowned products, services and attractions to the travel agent community.

Some enterprising members of the travel community, including agencies that specialize in selling travel to the Caribbean Diaspora markets, have joined the Saint Lucia Tourist Board and hotel representatives on the Road Show tour which will call at more than 25 cities in the United States and Canada.

"Now's not the time to twiddle our fingers, ride out the fall and assume we will have a strong winter - rather, it's time to tell the world what's on offer on our island and encourage past and potential vacationers to visit Saint Lucia now," said Director of Tourism Louis Lewis, who was in New York City for the première.

Taking a Hike to the Top
 My Blue Mountain Adven-Tour
By Eddy Edwards - September 25-27.

Steel Band

Yes, I can truly say, "I've been to the mountain top." and fortunately, I did not return with 2 tablets of commandments, but a satisfying sense of accomplishment.

Climbing the Blue Mountain to its peak, Jamaica's highest mountain range, - 7,402 ft., has been a lifelong desire on mine and finally it was accomplished.

A small group left from Kingston and head into the hills on Friday, September 25 to Mavis Bank. We transferred to a Land Rover (Jeep), which took us up to Whitfield Hall where we had dinner and a quick nap before the climb.

At approximately 3 am we began our hike, and for the next 4 hours we put our body through a rigorous climb to the peak where we enjoyed the breathtaking view and cool temperatures. Yes we made it to the peak.

By the time we returned to the lodge  it was time for lunch, which was a delicious dish of ackee and saltfish, fried dumplings, banana and the sweetest St. Vincent yam you ever tasted.  Exhausted and sore,  we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, soothing our bodies and chatting with the staff of the lodge.

Dinner was cooked on a woodfire; fried chicken, curry goat with  rice and peas in real grated coconut cream scented with a Scotch Bonnet. Yummy! Top the night off listening to some soothing oldies music, sipping real Blue Mountain Coffee and telling jokes round a Tilley Lamp while the fireplace blazed.

Barry by fireplace

Barry relaxes by the fireplace after hiking to the top earlier.

Sunday morning after breakfast we headed down the hill to the airport for the return flight.

This was an experience to treasure and remember for life. Dis is de 'real' Jamaica, where the people still smile or "buss a laugh" and "howdy and tenk yuh" still greets you.

Special thanks to Kevin Burke-Green for making all the travel arrangements, Michael Brown for the video shoot and Alex Davis and Michael Green who were good company for the weekend.

"Big UP" to the lovely folks at the Whitfield Hall Hostel.  Tiger, who made sure we needed nothing, our guide to the peak, Jason and everyone who made our stay enjoyable and memorable.  Nuff Respect.
